The first attempts to provide a mechanical solution to floor cleaning were begun in England in 1599. In the early 1900s, a janitor created an electric vacuum using a fan motor, soap box, broom handle, and a pillowcase to design the first commercial bag-on-a-stick upright vacuum cleaner.
